Dear Esther

The Chinese Room was a previously little-known experimental development studio which had just separated from the University of Portsmouth. Their debut game, Dear Esther, had already generated a cult following during its time as a Half-Life 2 mod, but the team’s ambitious remake – with environment design from Mirror’s Edge level artist Robert Briscoe – needed to step things up a gear. As one of the only games to officially license Valve’s Source Engine technology, and with a sizeable investment from Indie Fund to pay off, Dear Esther needed to be a big success despite its experimental nature and potentially small appeal. The Chinese Room approached us to manage launch PR; the company had no other marketing resources available.
